So what do Texan millionaires do with their spare change? Collect mediocre Czech art and then publish a book about it. I got the book for its section on glass. I needn't have bothered. As to the graphic art, it mostly looked like high-end porno. And, to boot, much more text than pictures.
excellent collection of czech surrealist/avant-garde visual art (with a bit of glass, which i’m less interested in but still found worthwhile).there are few books published in english on the history of czech surrealism-- which is a real shame, considering the country's immense contribution to the surrealist/avant-garde movements across europe. at its height, the czech surrealist collective in prague rivaled that of paris, and the two scenes were actually quite intertwined and collaborative.this book in particular is special in my opinion, because it contains the largest representation of toyen that i have seen. women are often excluded from visual arts in general, and the surrealists were no exception. this book contains several toyen paintings, collages and line-drawings which i had not seen before-- which is exactly why i purchased it.
