Beim Consulting spielen die Soft-Factors eine größere Rolle als die Hard-Factors (Wissen um Technologien etc.). Ein systematischer Zugang zu den Soft-Factors ist schwierig bis unmöglich.Weinberg schafft es, durch eine Reihe von leicht merkbaren Regeln, viel Licht ins Dunkel der Soft-Factors zu bringen. Seine Tipps sind sofort einsetzbar und von unschätzbarem Wert für die Arbeit jedes Consultants.Fazit: Jeder Consultant muss das Buch gelesen haben. JEDER!

Yes, I read this book years ago but somehow lost my copy. It's one of the few books I have ever bothered to buy a second time since the information and ideas are timeless. Also great as a reference work when you need a new shot at a nagging problem.
Weinberg liefert einen Sack voll Einsichten humorvoll formuliert.Wie so oft bei derartigen Büchern ist man beim Lesen begeistert und 3 Wochen später kann man sich kaum noch an die wesentlichen Punkte erinnern. Bei diesem Buch sind aber doch ein Punkte hängen geblieben. Ich habe sogar meine Webseite deswegen umformuliert.Ich schätze ich werde es die nächsten Jahre immer mal wieder durchblättern.

As the subtitle of this book suggests, it contains a lot of thoughts about how and when you should give advice. It also says why this is the case.You have to know: as a programmer I never understood why nothing ever happened when I pointed out a problem. I never understood why people wouldn't embrace my idea to solve their problem. I hoped I would find answers to this (and similar) questions in the book - and I wasn't disappointed!The book itself is well written, humorous and has a lot of little stories that illustrate the points the author wants to make. After reading the book I found variations of those stories happening in my environment - and by remembering the stories, I was sometimes able to remember the advice.I really enjoyed to read this book and quickly finished it. I'm sure I will reread it again some time in the future.There is so much good advice in this book and it is such a quick read, that I recommend you get a copy yourself. You probably get your moneys worth even if you are not a consultant (which I am not either) or planning to become one.
The thing is that he knows that by titling a chapter "Rudy's Law of Rutabega" rather than titling it "How to Keep Problems in Perspective" he has helped you to remember his points. They keep coming to me when I'm in a situation. I must have explained Rudy's Law of Rutabega a few hundred times to friends, family, and clients.Whether you are employed by a company, or you are an independant consultant, you are asked to give and take advice, and to solve problems. As a programmer, I found this book very useful, but the book does not really have anything to do with programming, or consulting. It's more about dealing with the problems, giving and accepting advice, and maintaining a helpful [and professional] demeanour in the midst of an essentially human [and therefore not essentially technical] set of problems.Best advice: never promise to solve a problem. Promise 10% improvement to a working system at best. A doubling of productivity/throughput makes you you look good, at someone else's else's expense. That person then becomes your enemy. Not worth it.
