Review Written 01/25/2019The book is a concise biography of the life and accomplishments of Simon Bolivar. BolÃvar is regarded as one of history’s most influential figures, instumental in shaping tthe national identity and politics of many South Americain countries existing today. Honored and loved throughout South America, known as “The Liberatorâ€â€”a title which he held proudly—BolÃvar once said he would rather he was a liberator than a king or an emperor. He was christened Simón José Antonio de la SantÃsima Trinidad BolÃvar Palacios Ponte y Blanco, born on July 24, 1783, in Caracas, located in modern-day Venezuela. His parents were both of Spanish aristocratics, each of well-established wealth and power. In his youth, BolÃvar was strongly influenced by one by a tutor who taught liberal thought envoking in the young BolÃvar his abiding, life-long desire to seek and maintain independence for his home country of birth, Venezuela. Beyond that, BolÃvar was driven to seek independence and end slavery in all of South America under the control of Spain. By the end of his life he was created with leading the armed revolutions that sucessfull obtained the independence of numerous sovereign states, including presen day; Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia. During his life he servied as the president of Gran Colombia from 1819 until his death in 1830. He also simultaneously served as the dictator of Peru from 1823 to 1826.This book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Hourly History. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts purposfully designed to be read in one to two hours. This historical collection is focused on chronicling the lives of important persons, key events, nations, and peoples. I have read a number of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective.This book provided, a concise, straight forward account that I found, a little difficult to read. While It was well researched, it seemed to this reader, written for a young adult reader. The narrative was simplistic, repeative, and occasionally seemed like it was designed for young adult. While factual, I found it lacking in depth and difficult to enjoy. This volumn was clearly not of similar quallity as most other Hourly History biography and history offerings that I have previously read. Readers who enjoy history and biographies might enjoy this book.
Someone I'd heard of but never really knew much about.By this account - a truly impressive (but -unfortunately- short) life and career of a man with high ideals.There would have been constraints to fit this life into the hour's read - but there's a lack of explanations. For instance, just WHY did Bolivar want to break away from Spanish rule; he survives assassination but we don't know how, etc....
Simon Bolivar was the George Washington of South America. Gran Colombia, Santander, Santa Marta & Cúcuta are all quite prevalent. A good short history. Just don’t confuse Simon with Hugo or Madura. He died at the early age of 47 in Santa Marta. Socorro was not mentioned, but I know how important this beautiful village was to the revolution. Good read.
Simon Bolivar was a man driven by a vision of countries in Spanish South America to be freed from the yoke of Spanish rule. He accomplished much of his goal, only to have the countries come under the rule of brutal dictators. A very good summary.
Very interesting account of the man who tried to unite South America for the greater good. He was a dictator but, seemed to be more for the people. Bolivar is the most remembered name in South America. A country is even named after him.
